ARTIST'S  PROFILE

ANGEL GABRIEL FIERRO was born in CERVINARA (Avellino) and has resided in MORBEGNO (SONDRIO) Northern ITALY since 1969, where he carries out the activity of FISCAL DIRECTOR of the Ministry of Finances - Income Taxes till november 2006 and then he's retired.

 The numerous activities that Fierro performs include poet, journalist, painter, archaeologist, literary critic, amateur radio operator, astronomer, and numerous other interests, but his primary activity is that of a SCULPTOR.

Fierro has degree in LAW-Administration Sciences  in Rome in Italian University, in Journalism in SWISS, in Economic and Social Sciences h.c. in U.S.A.

At present  Fierro is attending in ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS OF BRERA IN MILANO.

 Fierro became a PAINTER and SCULPTOR during the 60s and remained a painter until 1998, while since 1999 he has chosen to dedicate his time purely to SCULPTURE, considering it to be a more interesting and involving activity. This activity became further perfected working in Ortonovo di Carrara at "the Bottega of the Lorenzini Brothers"and other studios in Pietrasanta.

He focuses greatly on the search of the purest nature, working with alabaster, marble, quartz, limestone and other materials succeeding in giving an exceptional liveliness to the images that pour out.

Fierro loves working white quartz and limestone for the great effects that they give to the carved image. It is for this reason that he uses stones in which morphologic elements of the human figure can be found, completing the work that NATURE has begun, such as with the GEISHA or MATERNITY in limestone from Cervinara. Fierro is a figurative artist and an original subject; he loves to work "en plein air" submerging himself in free nature, among high mountain peaks, where the spirit rises beyond the matter that he succeeds in moulding. It's enough to simply look at the photos of his sculptures: WOMAN In the WIND - carved in a great Limestone rock from Trentino, situated in the area of the Saint Marco Pass, to understand the beauty of the executed work; or  Princess SISSI in pink stone of Verona and a copy in bronze like a gush fountain, or also The Japanese GEISHA, or MATERNITY - wonderful works in limestone executed in 2005.

The latest sculptures made in beginning 2006 is  "LEDA AND SWAN" in marble of Carrara..mesures h.72x50x60 , and in the 2007, August , Fierro has carved in a great rocks of granite in VALMASINO (Sondrio) two great operas called "THE DANCER" and AGUIRRE" of cm. 160x250 each one .

The latest opera made  in 2007  August is a beautiful sculpture called (LA VERITA' NASCOSTA) - HIDDEN TRUTH , in white marble of Carrara - cm. 60x210x60 , made in workshop of F.lli LORENZINI in ORTONOVO of Carrara.

At Saint Marco Pass, 2000 meters in Altitude between the provinces of Sondrio and Bergamo, we find beautiful and meaningful works carved into cliffs - like the group "The 4 Faces in the Wind "in serpentine rock," Mars "and " the Valkiria "carved in quartz and white calcite;" Face of Cristina "in common mixed quartz ;" Face of Elena "in serpentine rock ; "J. Christ "in serpentine rock ; " the Daughters of the Stars "; "the Mermaid of the Pass" in serpentine rock;  VENUS , PLATO, LEONARDO da VINCI, ANNALISA, DANTE, VIPER, GECO, The PHARAON,"J.F. Kennedy" in granite rock; and other works that we find on mountains of Partenio in his birthplace Cervinara (AV) in limestone rocks, like "the Sphinx and the Pharaoh" ; "the Turtle"; "the Face of the Madonna of the Partenio"; "the Self-portrait" and "the Ram"; POPE WOYTILA with two angelic faces at his feet ; The LION carved and placed in the Communal Villa of Cervinara in 2005. Other works can be seen in the public garden of Morbegno (Sondrio), the town where the artist lives and operates, including "The SLEEPING VIRGIN" placed in the public garden of MORBEGNO close to Communal Library and the Natural Sciences and History Museum ", and in the local " Ambrosetti - Parravicini Retirement Home of Morbegno", we can see "the Great Father" and "Fountain" on the back of the Great Father. Fierro's works can be found in many foreign countries in private and public collections including in the Italian Institute of Culture in the New York University where there's "The Hope" sculpture in quartz, and again in New York, where in the most prestigious restaurant" LE CIRQUE 2000 " you can find one of the most beautiful sculptures, called" The Virgin in green quartzite". Other works are in California, Alabama, Massachusetts and Ohio, above all in gardens and private Villas in Long Island and in Los Angeles; other works are in the Museum of History and Art of Luxembourg, in the International University of Montecarlo, in the Italian-American MUSEUM of NEW YORK , in the Italian Institute J. COCCIA in the MONTCLAIR UNIVERSITY in NEW JERSEY where there's a sculpture in alabaster called JADA. A work called "Escape in the Wind" is located in the MONTECARLO Palace of Government, while another work is in the International UNIVERSITY in the PRINCIPALITY of MONACO, representing the great scientist Albert Einstein in white quartz, others are in the Department of the Treasury of Milan and Lecco.

Fierro is continuously searching for the pure aesthetic concept, the perfection and the beauty that he finds only in feminine faces - the most meaningful and expressive! For his art he has been defined "the Poet of Sculpture" because he gives life to unknown stones of calcite and quartz that he finds on mountains in Valtellina and in his home area CERVINARA (Avellino) too, which possesses interesting materials for sculpting such as limestone.

VALORI PLASTICI FRA IMMAGINI DI COSMICA LIBERTÀ'
Quella di Angelo Gabriele FIERRO, nella storia artistica degli ultimi decenni, è infatti l' intreccio tra ricerca e sperimentazione di valori plastici con valori fondamentali dell'arte, a favore dell'urgenza espressiva dell'immagine e la fierezza di una stirpe mediterranea, di uomini e artisti, formati alla scuola della storia e della vita.

Di un "irregolare" manierato coacervo di stilemi, tra "memoramento" e "smemoramento", che ricusa ad ogni classificazione, e che esige ben altro che l' attenzione svagata e distratta della critica. Un prometeo che si offre allo spettatore, come una vetrina artistica di opere, attraversata da un'allure febbrile, sotterraneamente romanzata.

Quasi un periodo di mutazioni per valori plastici, anche per il ramificarsi di queste sue infinite virtù del segno e del rilievo plastico, con l'esigenza di vedere rispecchiata e ritrovarvi la propria avventura d'uomo e artista, con la passione per gli antichi splendori della classicità, e della rinascenza manierata, che non vede più il predominio della grande corte, ma il ramificarsi del gusto raffinatissimo di provincia, che ha influenzato pure, per indotto visionario, il nostro bravo Fierro.

Attualmente, l'artista predilige lavorare il quarzo bianco e la calcite - oltre al marmo naturalmente e primariamente -, per gli effetti strabilianti che essi danno all'immagine scolpita priva di vincoli formali accademici e di schemi ripetitivi, ma ricca di insegnamenti forniti dall'ispirazione, dalla cronaca e dalla vita quel riverbero già detto da Leopardi: l'arte è simile alla filosofia, deve discendere, come per gli antichi, dalla natura e dall'esperienza del mondo, non dai libri o dai libercoli.

Fierro sembra proprio che se ne compiaccia a sperimentare queste virtù infinite del segno, basta osservare le opere scolpite a Passo San Marco, a quota 2000 metri,, fra la provincia di Sondrio e di Bergamo come Il Gruppo scultoreo " I Quattro volti al vento", in roccia di serpentino, che hanno lo sguardo rivolto verso l'infinito. Immagini di cosmica libertà, per una vicenda interiore e un processo formativo che si svolgono e si attuano nel contatto vivo della materia e del plasma vitale che la anima, gesto dopo gesto, segno dopo segno, restituite ad una cosmica libertà.

Di un sanguigno realismo di matrice espressionista, nel quale l'artefice ritrae volti e situazioni di umanità fiera, impregnata di solitaria contemplativa meditazione, e di intenso impegno per dare durata ed eternità a qualcosa che non dovrebbe mai sparire: l'ARTE.
